White Prayer with Wings
Driving just above the speed limit
in my constant pursuit of efficiency,
I chanced to notice a great white egret.
Motionless
on the edge
of a black pond
in the midst
of a field
of spent grass.
A marble statue.
A white silhouette.
A saint.
Her perfect beauty
looking back at her
from the dark water.
